Why Consider a Workplace Pantry

There is no such thing as a free lunch. Or is there? A number of companies nationwide are discovering the value of complementary food and beverages for their employees and finding that access to a workplace pantry is increasingly regarded as a perk. For a nominal investment – after all, how much is a bag of chips or a bottle of water – companies are improving employee satisfaction/retention AND their ability to appeal to prospective new hires. Don’t believe it? Consider the research.

Current Employees:

According to BI Worldwide, 67% of employees working in offices that provided free food expressed satisfaction in the workplace. This is well above average. An office pantry can improve retention.

Prospective Employees:

In a survey by Peapod, 48% of respondents indicated that they could be lured to a new company that offered better perks including free snacks. An office pantry can work as a recruiting tool.

Millennials are more susceptible to the appeal of free food and beverages than any other age group.  Furthermore, they are expected to account for 75% of the workforce by 2030 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.  Translation: companies best pay attention. This is especially important as, according to Gallup, millennials change jobs more often than other generations (about 21 percent of millennials report switching jobs within the last year), and their turnover alone costs the U.S. economy an estimated $30.5 billion annually.

Now what was that about about the cost of a bag of chips?
